Meshal's devlog ⋆˚࿔

Currently, I've been creating iterations for the logo and planning out elements we'll need on the itch page (such as a game cover, logo, itch page background, dividers for the descriptions of the game). I've finalized the logo, and after discussing with my group we've decided on the colour palette of the logo to make it cohesive with the game. For the logo we leaned towards 2 3 and 4, and ended up deciding the balance of the cockroach was better in 3 and we wanted the font in 2 and three, but 2 didnt have the roach so we finalized our choice as 3. In the next week, I'll be adding colours and effects to the logo and finalize it. I've also been figuring out what I want for the thumbnail with a mood board and figured out the overall layout and colour palette layer for that, and will draw that in the upcoming week. I also plan on figuring out what I want on the itch page background so I've been looking at different itch pages for some visual research, I figured something I wanted was some type of light focused on the roach to bring attention to it

Today we went over the codes we had already (moving the roach and collisions for the wall) and organized our GitHub, we talked about what sprites we had to finish which included the final version of the roach and its walk cycle, spider enemy, sprites for the puzzle, and sprites for the background and split them up between the illustrators. Additionally from last week's logo, though I had planned to color it at first I decided I wanted it to be flat color instead so you can focus on the roach in the logo and the words, i thought the simple look felt better. I worked on the spider enemy and made frames for his arms to stab the fly (this would play if the roach collides with the enemy), I did a few iterations of color schemes and drew it with a web to see how it might look. I also looked at some refrences like this spider boss from Zombotron (Lucas sent this!)  This week I’m going to work on the title screen I’d had planned to last week and work on the design of our itch page. At first we were going with the first spider because it would stand out against the background, but later ended up going with the black spider as it matched the gloomy aesthetic of the game.

This week I finished the cover for the itch page and plan on fixing the overall layout with what we have so far. We got our main character sprites and enemy sprites and a lot of the physics of the code some, we’ll just need to get our puzzle sprites and code those interactions. We also need to create a mid ground with moldy food to have as the boundaries for collision rather than just a blank wall, so I plan of photo bashing stock images of food/moldy food together with some sort of grain texture for it and see where that goes.  I had the fridge light above the cockroach to have that area glow inorder to focus on the roach and the hand behind grabbing for the can. I decided on not having a detailed face for the person aside from a tired and half-asleep expression because how else would this person would not notice their nasty fridge, I decided on photobashing and throwing glitch effects on the food around because I wanted it to be seen, but not too detailed. I also made the area further from the fridge light darker, like the other light be broken and so you can only see really dim light, and also because I wanted contrast for the title to sit without looking at too much.

This week our game was play tested and in final production we finished pretty much all our sprites and backgrounds and there’s more of a focus on the coding aspect of the game. I took notes for feedback and general comments from the play tests this week and we figured out any last minute quick fixes and major fixes that needed to be done. A few others took on the task of making food props so I decided to continue working on the final overall look of the itch page. We had also discussed our game trailer and how we’d like that to be formatted and plan on having the roach come out from it’s egg and be the only one left and then add in clips of gameplay so that will be animated aswell. I made a tiled background to kind of give a kitchen-like marble tile and added silhouettes of diffrent creatures you'd find in game like the roach, spider, mouse and fly. I also used the same color pallette for the back and used the same font for each subheader of the game to keep things cohesive (which can be seen on the itch page :} ).
